You’ve got the ball teed up and you’re deep in concentration. You’re trying to remember every little tip at the same time. Feet square, eye on the ball, loose grip, its all in the hips, keep your knees slightly bent, etc., etc. You take a whack, causing the ball to fly straight out about 50 yards. Have you done it?! Before your brain can finish processing the sentence the ball takes a harsh turn towards the trees. You’ve sliced it again.
What causes a slice in golf?
As you probably know, the slice and hook are the golfers mortal enemies. What are we all doing wrong to deserve such treatment? We baby our clubs by cleaning them, practice whenever we get free time, maybe purchased a training video or taken lessons. Heck, we’ve even dreamed golf. A perfect dream where everything we hit is straight, and right on target. So what gives?!
The slice is the result of the club head making contact in a slightly open position. That is, the face is open relative to the direction that the club is traveling at the moment of impact and throughout the follow through. The initial impact pushes the ball outward hard and fast, but once the wind slows the ball’s acceleration enough to have an effect, the clockwise rotation on the ball sends it slicing. Its really not all that different than a curveball.
So how do I fix a slice?

I’m sorry, I shouldn’t get your hopes up. The only cure is practice. But practice, in this case, doesn’t make perfect if you’re not practicing correctly.
Here are some of the most common culprits of a slice:
Grip
Many golfers have trouble accepting that you really should be gripping the club gently. Set the ball up, and place the club square behind the ball. Grip the club with your left hand (if you’re a righty, vice versa for lefties). This is your dominant hand. Use this hand to make sure you don’t send the club the same way you send the ball. Your other hand is merely a guide.
Ball Position
Experiment with different ball placement. Often times I’ve seen golfers have great success moving the ball back a few inches in their stance.
Swinging too hard
Easy there Tiger! I mean honestly what’s better? A 300 yard drive that lands on the fairway of some other hole? Or the 200 yarder thats sits perfectly on the fairway, setting you up for a quality approach?
Slow down that swing. Exaggerate! Hit the ball 30 yards. Get a feel for the swing and take notice of the club trajectory as its coming through the ball. Its not easy to do this if you’re yanking the club through so hard you can’t even see the impact.
Begin swinging and stop as you reach the ball. Would this have gone straight? Where’s the club face looking? As you improve, put more strength behind the shot, but remain focused. You’re training your nervous system to repeat the proper swing.
Proper Practice Makes Perfect
Get out there and give it a shot. If you’re unable to correct a swing flaw that you’ve spent years doing incorrectly, you might consider enlisting the help of a professional trainer, or a golf training aid. I swear by the Medicus, and its not all that expensive to boot.
